Japan’s leadership in the race to place hydrogen at the forefront of its clean energy transition has been re-emphasised in a significant new development.

Plans have been announced to build a new ammonia import terminal, which would receive and store vast quantities of clean hydrogen-derived ammonia.

Japan has committed billions of dollars to hydrogen to meet its decarbonisation goals.

The latest part of the plan sees Japanese engineering firm IHI Corporation and Dutch tank storage company Royal Vopak signing a deal that would see the pair building the ammonia terminal as part of a joint development agreement.

The partnership aims to get the terminal operating by March 2031.
