Toyota’s leadership in the hydrogen space has been highlighted in two vastly different spheres in recent days.

Continuing to put hydrogen at the centre of a multi-tech approach to carbon neutrality, the company has unveiled a next generation racing car powered by liquid hydrogen, while also confirming it has integrated its fuel cell systems into 40-tonne hydrogen-powered trucks for European logistics routes.

The sleek looking race car, the GR LH2 Racing Concept, was exhibited at the recent Le Mans 24-hour race.

The car runs on a hydrogen combustion engine paired with a hybrid system, though full technical details haven’t been shared yet.

The reveal came about the same time Toyota said it had expanded its fleet of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks to include five vehicles operating across key logistics routes in Europe.

Under an agreement with logistics providers Vos Transport Group, CEVA Logistics, Groupe CAT, and Yusen Logistics, the vehicles will operate across Belgium (Diest), France (Lille), Germany (Cologne), and the Netherlands (Rotterdam and Weesp).

Toyota has said the fuel cell trucks deliver performance comparable to diesel trucks, with a range of up to 400km on a single refuelling. But they have massive emissions advantages.

Hydrogen advances also continue to be made in the cruise ship sector.

The latest to move is HD Hyundai, who will offer the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system to the European cruise ship market.

"We aim to lead global maritime decarbonization efforts with our high-efficiency, low-carbon fuel cell technology," the company told PRNewsire.

The system significantly reduces carbon and pollutant emissions, while producing a low level of noise and vibration.

TUI Cruises will supply data to Hyundai in the trial phase.

According to global market research firm Grand View Research, the global SOFC market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40.7% through 2030, reaching approximately US$7.12 billion.

Meanwhile, Hydrogen Fuel News is reporting India’s first hydrogen-powered commercial bus fleet has hit the road.

It says NTPC Limited "has taken a major step toward a clean, sustainable future" by handing over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to SIDCO Ladakh, in Leh.

"With that, India’s first commercial hydrogen-powered bus fleet officially hit the road — and it’s also the highest-altitude deployment of fuel cell technology anywhere in the world. Now that’s what you call making history."

The five buses are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 350 metric tons per year.
