Helium-3 has been found at Gold Hydrogen’s Ramsay Project.

The race to the moon to harvest rare and expensive Helium-3 is hotting up.

Interlune, the first company to launch plans for a lunar harvest of Helium-3, has named 2029 as the year it plans to be fully harvesting, while a rival moon explorer has emerged.

Interlune, backed by US$18m in funding, has developed a prototype lunar excavator with Vermeer Corp to process 100t/h of regolith needed due to helium-3’s ultra-low concentrations.

Now, it says it will launch prospecting in 2027, with full scale harvesting due in 2029.

"At $20 million dollars a kilogram, helium-3 is the only resource in the universe that is priced high enough to warrant going to space and bringing it back to Earth," Interlune cofounder and CEO Rob Meyerson told Newsweek recently.

Helium-3, if available in high enough quantities, could revolutionize a number of industries, including quantum computing (as a cooling agent), national security and medical imaging.

Interlune is working with Elon Musk's SpaceX, which recently unveiled the latest design of its super heavy-lift launch vehicle, Starship.

Meanwhile, a new rival to Interlune has emerged, with LH3M being granted five US patents covering its full architecture for detecting, extracting, and refining Helium-3 from the Moon.

Interlune does not have patents for the full architecture and process, rather just for a moon mining platform.

It’s been reported LH3M sees a potential $17 trillion annual return based on global demand for clean energy and quantum infrastructure.

Helium-3 readings have been found at Gold Hydrogen’s South Australia project and further drilling later this year will tease out the early results.

The company is monitoring reports that scientists have discovered a new way to extract Helium-3 directly from liquid helium using a special filter that combines two quantum effects: superfluidity and superconductivity.

It would be more efficient and could be cheaper than current techniques.
