The strong financial performance of natural hydrogen companies – including Gold Hydrogen – has been highlighted in a quarterly report on global helium and natural hydrogen trends.

The Akap Energy report says the natural hydrogen industry has expanded rapidly, growing from fewer than 10 companies to over 100 currently involved in early-stage research and exploration, 20 of which are publicly listed.

"Over the past 12 months these companies are up 115% on average," the report says.

It says Gold Hydrogen is one of the "most advanced firms".

"Gold Hydrogen is another standout performer, having discovered high concentrations of H2 in South Australia and a planned drilling campaign over the next year."

It highlights the buy-in by big Japanese players Eneos, Toyota and Mitsubishi.

"We believe that the natural hydrogen industry has immense potential, evoking a sense of déjà vu from the helium industry five or six years ago -- a few early-stage companies with promising discoveries, each trying to commercialise their resources."

If the industry achieved "a levelised cost of production below US$1/kg", it would be "significantly lower than competing hydrogen forms".

"This is an extraordinary transformation in less than five years, driven by early exploration successes, new acreage acquisitions, and a wave of investor interest in alternative energy pathways."

Meanwhile, with high levels of helium also found in initial testing at its South Australian tenement, Akap’s helium report is also pertinent for Gold Hydrogen investors.

It points out that helium production in this country ceased in 2023 when a Darwin plant closed down. It was supplying 2% of global helium.

"Historically the plant supplied around 30% of its supply to meet domestic demand, which will now have to switch to imports."

Overall, market cap in helium companies had grown in the quarter, year-on-year.

"The helium sector is slowly inching back towards its 2022 highs as junior explorers come closer towards first production. The sector has seen a 3-month growth of 27% and 6-month growth of 63%."
