It’s encouraging to see natural hydrogen included as a significant part of Geoscience Australia’s Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity program.

Part of the new 10-year plan in the US$3.4bn geoscience drive will be dedicated to evaluating natural hydrogen as both a resource and a storage option.

Gold Hydrogen managing director Neil McDonald said the inclusion was validation for the early work his company had done in proving the resource existed.

"Being a public company has certainly helped with the education about natural hydrogen in this country," Mr McDonald said. "We’ve provided proof points that are inspiring others globally and this backing from Geoscience Australia for our industry will fast-track opportunities as well as give us added credibility."

Workstreams in the program include a national hydrogen storage assessment by 2027, targeted data acquisition, and prospectivity studies aimed at identifying Australia’s most promising natural hydrogen hubs.

The initiative also links to broader deep-dive regional studies, such as Georgetown–Julia Creek in Queensland, which will integrate critical minerals, groundwater, and hydrogen potential.

By improving subsurface mapping and resource assessments, the programme is expected to accelerate investment decisions and position Australia as a key player in the emerging global natural hydrogen sector.

Australia has been a leader in the natural hydrogen hunt, with several companies, including Gold Hydrogen, in advanced stages of exploration.

After confirming high levels of both hydrogen and helium in the sub-surface in 2024 testing, Gold Hydrogen will launch a second stage of drilling later this year, with the aim of gathering enough data to plan a pilot project towards commercialisation.
