Top Japanese energy and economic leaders are hoping Gold Hydrogen’s latest drilling campaign can be an energy "game changer" for their country.

More than 30 Japanese officials toured Gold Hydrogen’s Ramsay 3 well site today, just as the drill rig for a new natural hydrogen testing campaign was being erected.

Included in the party were representatives from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, other industry bodies and large corporates like Iwatani Corporation, Tokyo Gas, Eneos Xplorer and Mitsubishi.

The visit comes days after the Vice-Governor of the Aichi province also visited the South Australian site near Minlaton.

METI spokesman Hasegawa Yuya said Japan’s need for imported energy made it a crucial visit.

"If we had an abundance of natural hydrogen, it could be a game changer," Mr Yuya, METI’s director of the energy resources development division, said.

His country was already heavily dependent on Australian energy exports, and continued natural disasters like earthquakes, and a predicted 20% electricity growth in the next 20 years sparked by AI and other new technologies, meant Japan needed even more help.

"We are lacking in natural resources," he said. "We need to diversity our energy sources."

The country continued to work on options like nuclear, renewables and natural gas, but all had limitations.

"Hydrogen is a potential candidate for our energy."

With man-made green hydrogen being years away from any chance of being economically viable, Gold Hydrogen’s play was significant.

"Natural hydrogen could be really important. If it’s economically viable, Japanese companies will start to show interest."

Already Toyota, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Eneos Xplorer have bought into Gold Hydrogen.

Their investment was helping fund the latest round of drilling, with 2-3 new wells to be drilled.

Managing director Neil McDonald said he hoped Ramsay 3 would be spudded on the weekend.

Flow testing would not be done till Q1 next year, but he said the aim was to gather enough data about the levels of hydrogen and helium in the ground to develop a pilot project.

The Company found record levels of both gases in 2023 when it became the first in the country to drill specifically for natural hydrogen.

The Company will update once drilling has begun.
