Helium supply has been cited as a hidden bottleneck in the rapidly expanding semiconductor manufacturing market.

With both the US and EU putting in billions of dollars in incentives and aid rebuilding semiconductor sovereignty, helium has been identified as a critical constraint.

Helium is used extensively in chipmaking for its inertness and thermal conductivity. Helium demand for semiconductor manufacturing is tipped to double by 2035 compared to 2024 levels.

An Akap Energy report underlined the need to secure helium supplies to sustain the semiconductor industry’s growth.

With no helium currently being produced in Australia, and Gold Hydrogen close to launching its second round of drilling in South Australia where high levels of helium were found in initial 2024 testing, it is a development the company is keeping a close eye on.
