Another international study has supported scientists’ beliefs that mysterious "fairy circles" are markers for underground natural hydrogen.

The findings from the University of Vienna study, supported by OMV, is more back-up for Gold Hydrogen’s geologist team that they are in the right place.

There are dozens of fairy circles – barren circular patches found in places like Russia, Brazil and Australia – in Gold Hydrogen’s South Australia tenement, where high levels of both natural hydrogen and helium have been found.

The new study said the circles were directly linked to underground natural hydrogen seeps, with their size reflecting the depth and pressure of the hydrogen source.

A report on the study on Akap Energy said researchers had used geomechanical simulations to explain how hydrogen displaces groundwater, briefly uplifting the soil before subsidence occurs, creating the fairy circle depressions.

"These findings suggest that fairy circles could serve as reliable indicators for locating and estimating the depth of natural hydrogen deposits," the report said.

Recently, there was a similar study in Nebraska which linked fairy circles to natural hydrogen pathways.

Gold Hydrogen will launch its second round of drilling on the Yorke Peninsula in Q4 this year, aiming to prove there is enough of both gases to set up pilot projects towards commercialisation.

Chief Geologist Peter Bubendorfer said: "This study is another encouraging indicator that the signs we have followed for some time really are helpful in our hunt to commercialise near zero-carbon natural hydrogen."
