Drilling is about to begin to test natural hydrogen concentrations at a much-anticipated French site.

Paris-listed La Française de l’Énergie (FDE) is to begin exploratory drilling in the northeastern region of Lorraine, the company announced this week. It comes two years after researchers found “significant concentrations” of H2 at one of its existing wells in the area.

They were looking for methane gas at the time and initial predictions indicated natural hydrogen at potentially 46 million tons, worth billions of dollars.

Now, they have gone back to drill one well in Pontpierre, to 4,000 metres, in collaboration with the National Centre for Scientific Research and the University of Lorraine. They will study the results for five months.

The first drilling in France comes as Australia’s Gold Hydrogen gears up for its second round of drilling on its Yorke Peninsula tenement later this year, after strong helium and hydrogen showings were found in the first round of exploration.

Meanwhile, in other natural hydrogen news, a team of Chinese researchers have found that a vast system of hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean, the “Kunlun pipe swarm” near the Mussau Trench off the coast of Papua New Guinea, is pumping out the equivalent of nearly a million tonnes of H2 a year.

“Hydrogen reserves associated with these systems could potentially become a substantial source of clean energy,” the researchers, affiliated with the Laoshan Laboratory in Qingdao, wrote in the introduction to their paper published in peer-reviewed journal Science Advances.
